Unicorn Inn Orton On The Hill

So, there I was, driving through the English countryside, windows down, wind whipping through my hair, when I spotted something that made me do a double-take. A sign, weathered but proud, stood by the roadside, declaring "Unicorn Inn". Now, I'm not one to pass up a good pub, especially one with a mythical creature on the sign, so I did a quick U-turn and found myself parked outside the Unicorn Inn, Orton On The Hill.

First Impressions

Let me tell you, this place is a gem. It's like they took a slice of old England, dipped it in history, and served it up with a side of warm ale. The building is a charming mix of stone and timber, with a thatched roof that looks like it's seen a few centuries. I swear, if the walls could talk, they'd have some tales to tell.

Now, I'm not one to judge a book by its cover, but the outside had me hoping for a cosy interior. And boy, did it deliver. Think low ceilings, wooden beams, and a fireplace that could roast a whole ox. It's like stepping into a living history lesson, but with beer.

Behind the Bar

Behind the bar was Dave, a local legend by the looks of it. He had that certain something, you know? The kind of face that's seen laughter and tears, and maybe a few too many pints. He poured me a local ale, dark as the night and twice as smooth. I could feel the day's tension melting away with each sip.

Dave was a font of knowledge, too. He told me about the place, how it's been serving Orton On The Hill since the 17th century. He pointed out the old well in the corner, said it's been there since the place was built. I half expected to see a unicorn drinking from it, but alas, no mythical creatures today.

Food Fit for a King

I decided to stick around for dinner. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional English fare and modern twists. I went for the classic - fish and chips. When it arrived, I could've sworn I heard angels singing. The fish was fresh, the batter crisp, and the chips... well, they were everything chips should be. I washed it all down with another pint of that dark ale, and I have to say, it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time.

Now, I'm not usually one to indulge in desserts, but when Dave recommended the sticky toffee pudding, I couldn't resist. It was like a little slice of heaven on my plate. Warm, gooey, and sweet - it was the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Unicorns and All

As I sat there, nursing my pint and watching the fire dance, I thought about the name of the place. The Unicorn Inn. It's not every day you see a pub named after a mythical creature. But then again, this isn't every day. This is Orton On The Hill, where history meets hospitality, and where you can find a slice of old England in a pint glass.

So, if you ever find yourself driving through the English countryside, keep an eye out for that unicorn sign. Pull over, take a seat by the fire, and let the Unicorn Inn weave its magic on you. Just don't be surprised if you spot a real unicorn in the garden. After all, stranger things have happened, right?
